Roller Coaster Cricket

Twists and turns, highs and lows
Ups and downs, ebbs and flows.

Anticipation,frustration,jubilation
Sixty seven humiliation

Win a session, lose a session
Batting collapse, pavilion procession

Dot balls, singles fours and sixes
Commentators’ words of wisdom jinxes

Seaming swinging turning wicket
Emotional roller coaster cricket!

Plum Desserts

Now the ingredients of leg before,
To be sure it is a complex law;
I know that this will trouble you,
The law of the LBW!

Do not get your legs or rump,
Caught in line of cricket stumps.
Use your bat to hit the ball,
Your pads on legs, protect that's all.

Left arm over, right arm round,
To pad away is sometimes sound;
But if your leg's still in the crease,
Innings ended, out, deceased!

Plump umpire's finger up: its plum!
By speed, or spin, or seam been done;
Swing or bounce of ball is what:
Out! To pavilion back you trot.

You maybe think that you did hit it,
Oh the tiniest tap, or thinnest snicket.
It would have maybe missed the wicket;
Oh such complicated game this cricket!

Up to Hawkeye, check decision.
Cricket laws of long division;
Confirms trajectory of this complex sum,
Middle stump hit, your out, its plum!

How they stand!

In the stands they stand
The seated stand
All across the land
They understand
It’s the hope that kills, but Stokes’ skills
And luck and pressure and the crowd that wills
Ben Stokes; on bended knees now he can’t stand:
But supported by the England fans!

Ebbs & Flows of Test Match Cricket

Ebbs and flows, highs and lows
Pressure, depression
Bat through a morning session!

Balls full length, mental strength,
Uncle Algie’s words of wisdom
Can’t score runs sat in pavilion

Throw the book, make your luck
Defend and leave
Come on England we still believe!

Geoffrey and Vaughny Offer Batting Advice

Bat the morning take it slow
Leave the teasers let them go

New ball fizzes swings and seams
Patience picks the balls to cream

Take the shine and rise above it
Test match cricket how we love it

Ebbs and flows later on make hay
Come on England seize the day!

Ring of Confidence

Will the ring of confidence
Desert the green and gold?
Will the Bilbo Baggies
Lose the fellowship of old?
Will Joe Root and his Archers
Remember Agincourt?
Will Headingley’s Yorkshire spirit
Level series at one all?

Ashes Headingley 19

The Ashes come to Headingley
For the wicked there's no rest
Archer bowls accordingly
And Stokes drinks Boycott's Best

Three cheers for series leveller
Hands up to make a ton
A beer for all the revellers
Root's boys make it 1-1

Corridor of Uncertainty

In the corridor of uncertainty
Bat wavers next to pad
The front foot dithers loosely
The batsman has been had

Tempted to play firmly
Swinging seam bites balding track
Deceiving fair and squarely
Edging batsman trudges back!

Boycott's Best

Sir Geoffrey plays one off his legs
Leeds Brewery ferments pale ale in kegs
Morning, afternoon or evening session
Drink in Geoffrey’s batting obsession
Resolute balanced batting calmy
Cheered on by the Barley Army
Long hops, short hops, savour the taste
Like Geoffrey’s centuries, no need for haste!
Scent of linseed, colour of willow
Hint of rhubarb, golden, mellow
Front foot forward his defensive stance
In aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance
Fine pale ale, taste flowering rose
As Geoffrey flicks one off his toes
Another fine knock
As this opener cracks the bottle top
Tackles fizzers, how he comes alive
Boycott’s Best what a cover drive
Perfect line,  perfect length
Brewed to give the perfect strength!

Sco v Wales 2019

Foundation stone of old firm fortress
Relaid as Murrayfield welcomes Wales
Avenge the limping French loss, Ecosse
If at first, time to write your fables, tales.
Gregor Townsend chants, he rants and raves,
Calls for Scotland once more be brave!

Will Wales rub Saltire in their wounds?
Fresh from titanic battle Royal,
Left English hopes in Cardiff strewn;
Passion in the cauldron boiled!
Never say die, battered, bloodied and bruised,
This Welsh side don't know how to lose!

Edwards wary, been stung before
Thinks again! Plans and trains this fallow week
Gatland send off, just once more,
A slam perchance, hush, think, not speak!
No laurel resting, focus prepare
Dream maybe, but if you dare!

Promise of Scotland, still be delivered,
Injury ravaged, but Russell returns,
Throw caution to the wind, chill shivers
The bones of Welsh be Sosban burned.
Fortune favours the brave of heart,
Scotland a chance to make your mark!

Under Gatland

It is Spring, a moonless night, emotions and notions run through the principality

Expectation hangs in the coal blackened clouds that gather

And beckon from Brecon Beacons the backbone of South Wales.

From where fans write notes of hope from Pen y Fan.

Cymru, win through! Yes every boy and girl from every woman to every Man

The farmers, the fishers, the tradesmen and plasterer,

Cobbler, IT call centre, postman and publican,

The schoolteacher and the fancy woman, drunkard, dressmaker, preacher, policeman,

the webfootcocklewomen and the tidy wives.

No dashing of a drop of Welsh hope on that wishingboatbobbing sea

That brings hope for all to see!

There's soul mining in that stainless painless steel structure

Principality stadium light emanates, illuminates another burning beacon of hope

Firework smoke, not funeral pyres of tired dreams, rises through the gaping open roof

Like the flaming fire breathing dragon from this cavenous cacophonous cauldron

Of chanting and cheering, the yearning, the story of World cup glory.

An end to men of hard luck, you are the men of Harlech!

A World Cup handcupping to drink in every drop of hope

And watch the win in every breath of dragon fire breathing smoke.

There's sooth sayers with prayers and male voice choirs

Good heavens from Evans

No dead wood but Edwards look skywards

From Leeks and daffodils to famous Phil's

The Powell's,  the Pritchards', the Price's

The front row power, vast pack, fast backs

Comprehend defend attack!

The Griffiths, the Morgans, the Rees and the Owens

The dummy from Dawes that's part of folklore

The Bennet's,  the Jones', the Davies... This may be

Our time, a Wyn Jones!

When the anthem plays, there'll be the odd shed tear

Pundits and players of yester year

Will gather and gossip of games gone by

Appetites whetted for this year's feast of bread from high.

Cardiff streets are buzzing

From Buffalo Bar to Old Arcade

From 10 Feet Tall where dreams are made

From YMochynDu to The Pen and Wig

We're thinking big!

The pop up places serving prime pulled pork,

Barbecues breathing fire and quenching urges,

Front gardens blessed with feasts of fresh grilled burgers.

Plastic pint pots brimming with beer and stout

A world cup year to shout about.

The walk from town to stadium,

The police horse calm amongst the throng,

The lubricated now break into song.

Anticipation of what lies ahead

The beer, the banter, the talk stops here

The shirt the badge the honour

Toughened by the river Taff

The singing of Sosban Fach

The talkings over the whistles blown

The memory and history to be over thrown

Wales your win is within reach

Think Welsh Pride of course is what we teach!

Wales v England 2019

The next game is the biggest test
What went before is now worthless
Wales have stuttered into life
But two from two still a good price

The petrol mix how Gatland tinkers
Pistons turn the cogs of thinkers
Revolution against the great mind gamer
Ignited in Principality chamber

Red then Green to chequered flag
Accelerate from grid to bag
The scalp of those in Six Nations form
Wales unleash a mighty storm

Throw sosbans, leeks into the mix
Daffodils, Dragons, Merlins best tricks
Geraint, Glyndwr, songs of Tom Jones
Oh let us rattle them to their bare bones

Composed England and their kicking game
Towards the Taff how they must tame
The throng the passion of this Welsh brethren
Silence out the Bread of Heaven!

So far all cylinders have been firing
Powerful, Clinical, awe inspiring
Pressure, intense, defence line speed
Chip n chase the backs be freed.

The power game, purring V8
Another gear Eddie says of late
Don't take for granted, who'll end with three?
On the grid for this great Grand Prix!

Eng v Fra 2019

Heads stuck in those changing halls
Still singing the Marseillaise?
English Bulldogs chasing balls
Unleash the hounds each phase

Daly scythed in search of space
Behind those enemy lines
A weighted kick, a running race
Parra lysed as Jonny flies!

Twickenham field forever England
Recycle attack attack
Space frontier for brothered band
Find black holes at the back!

High ball, dink, a chip and chase
All chomping at the bit
Chasing, harrowing in twos, a brace
Thieves in the thick of it.

Defence white cliffs of Dover
Abrasive, standing tall
Blood red rose all over
Protecting pill prized ball

Big men run at big men
Scrum time, line out, maul
Backs play what's in front of them
Each eyes, watch out, then call.

There's space in front, there's space behind
Split precise decisions are made
Attack the space eeked out and find
Clinical execution so well played!

Ireland v England 2019

Oh it is a complex sum!
How do we beat World number one.
A simple game upon our journey,
Repeat 03 our World Cup Story.

Up ahead the reigning champs,
Rampaging across the World they stamp
Authority no cutting slack
Black stuff beats Blacks aim back to backs

Boks brushed aside the Shamrocks rock
Wallabies, Southern hemisphere shocked
England, Italy, France and Wales
Scotland not take wind from sails!

A brand new start can we catch them cold
In Aviva be brave be bold
Get on a roll and build momentum
First step towards Six Nations champion

So all begins on February second
To Six Nations we're all beckoned
Be Brave Don't hide behind the crouch bind set
To the pub, oh yes you bet!

Unless of course you have a ticket
Singing anthems in the thick of it
Irish favourites of that I'll grant yer
Bring it on, good luck and slainte!
